Congratulations to geoff Holt and his crossing of the Atlantic. He becomes the first paraplegic to sail across the pond unaided. Fortunately he had very few medical issues and we were able to help him with these so that he could continue his voyage.
The Class 40's and the IMOCA 60's certainly had tough crossings of the Atlantic in their respective races and we were kept reasonably busy advising some of our clients while they were bashing into some strong breezes.
We are delighted to be able to announce that we have been able to bring in someone to help us with some of our work. Polly Gough was the "medic" who travelled around the globe with the Volvo fleet and has built up extensive experience in offshore medicine. Originally qualifying as a nurse, Polly has gone numerous courses and is now hugely qualified. As well as her medical training Polly has been on expeditions to Africa and sailed many thousands of miles making her the perfect asset to MSOS! We look forward to working with her for many years to come.
Although the Volvo is still a long way away and the course is not yet determined we are spending time looking at the medical kit to make it more efficient and organised.
We are looking forward to supporting the " Plastiki" project in their attempt to sail from San Francisco to Sydney in a Catamaran made of recyclable materials.
We are busy designing some Medical kits for new race boats and planning some further training days for race crews who want to be better prepared for any medical issues that might occur while out at sea.
We were involved closely with Pete Goss and his crew in his Cornish Lugger and were obviously sad to be phoned regarding his crew with a broken leg but were happy to be able to give them advice on how to manage the situation until they reached dry land in Australia.
We are also teaching Joint Services Adventure Sail Training Centre skippers and mates for the forthcoming Tri-Service Transglobal Race.
