The Race Kits are specifically designed to meet World Sailing Special Regulations (OSR) requirements for competitive sailing events. Under OSR regulations, all boats shall have "A First Aid Manual and First Aid Kit. The contents and storage of the First Aid Kit shall reflect the likely conditions and duration of the passage, and the number of crew". These comprehensive medical kits ensure compliance with approved medical kit standards for different racing categories and offshore distances.
Suitable for
The Race Kits are ideal for competitive sailing vessels participating in:
- OSR Category 0: Trans-oceanic races where boats must be completely self-sufficient for very extended periods. The boat and crew must be prepared to manage serious emergencies without the expectation of immediate rescue or assistance.
- OSR Category 1: Races of long distance, where boats must be completely self-sufficient for extended periods of time. This includes having adequate medical equipment and crew training to handle the demands of long-distance, offshore sailing.
- OSR Category 2: Races of extended duration along, or not far removed from, shorelines or in large unprotected bays or lakes. A high degree of self-sufficiency is required.
- OSR Category 3: Races across open water, most of which is relatively protected or close to shore.
These kits are designed for racing crews operating in environments where professional medical assistance may be hours or days away, with specific first aid training requirements mandated for different categories.
Kit Contents
Each Race Kit is housed in dry bags to ensure contents remain protected in harsh marine racing environments. The kits are configured according to the specific OSR category requirements:
Category 0 Kits include comprehensive offshore medical equipment with medications, IV fluids, diagnostics, airway and wound care for extended self-sufficiency. Equipment includes suturing supplies, intravenous access, advanced dressings, and comprehensive emergency medications.
Category 1 Kits feature similar robust equipment to Category 0 for multi-day passages, with comprehensive trauma care, advanced wound management, and emergency medications suitable for long-distance offshore racing exposed to storms.
Category 2 Kits provide slightly reduced scope compared to Categories 0/1 but include essential trauma care, haemorrhage control, basic diagnostics (including pulse oximeter), decontamination supplies, communication protocols, and comprehensive medical manual.
Category 3 Kits focus on basic offshore provision with fewer diagnostic tools and medications, emphasising stabilisation and communications to shore-based medical advice for coastal racing in relatively protected waters.
All kits include:
- Category-appropriate emergency medical supplies
- Seasickness and dehydration treatments
- Wound care and trauma management equipment
- Pain relief medications suitable for passage duration
- First aid manual appropriate for offshore conditions
- Clear organisation in transparent modules for quick identification
Training and Compliance
OSR regulations specify different training requirements for each category:
- Category 0: At least one crewmember with STCW A-VI/4-2 (Proficiency In Medical Care) certificate or equivalent, plus another with valid first aid certification
- Category 1: At least two crewmembers with valid first aid certificates
- Category 2: At least one crewmember with valid first aid certificate
- Category 3: At least two crew members familiar with first aid procedures, hypothermia, drowning, CPR, and communications (no mandatory formal certificate required)
